- I live a good 1,000 miles away from the nearest large body of water, in this case the Gulf of Mexico. Here on the Great Plains, we only need be concerned with the odd outbreak of tornadoes, most fairly narrow in their destructive path and relatively short-lived. Hurricanes in the Atlantic and eastern Pacific, typhoons in the western Pacific are of little consequence to us directly, except if we happen to have family or friends in the impacted areas; or my business is located in places like the Caribbean and Hawaii, both currently under the threat of hurricanes. These swirling masses of wind and rain move slowly and are hundreds of miles in width, their destruct capacity amplified by the irrepressible mass of surging ocean waves.
