Pothole Detection System Patented by Google

Google has patented a new pothole detection system in hopes of keeping drivers away from pothole-ridden streets. According to the patent filing, Google has designed vehicles with pothole detectors that use a combination of GPS and motion sensors to determine when the vehicle drives over a pothole. If the motion sensor is triggered as a result of hitting a pothole, the car’s navigation system will record where it was and send the data to a server. Eventually, Google would like to maintain an up-to-date database of broken roads so drivers who use Google Maps for navigation can avoid potholes. This isn’t the first time a company has developed something to help avoid road hazards.
