The quiet revolution: how hybrids became mainstream: Tuesday 29 May, 2012. The Green Piece Column. The other day...

Because Toyota didn’t launch its Prius model globally until 2000, Honda lays claim to the title of the original hybrid brand, after it launched its Insight model in 2009. Since then, the carmaker has sold more than 800,000 hybrid vehicles worldwide. This investment in hybrids from two of Japan’s top brands meant that through the early noughties, the word “hybrid” became a real buzzword and a must-have vehicle for many a vain Hollywood star trying to boost their green credentials (Leo DiCaprio, Demi Moore, Cameron Diaz and Julia Roberts to name a few).
