Smart parking meters will apply a surcharge to the most polluting vehicles Parking charges for electric, hybrid and low-emission vehicles are about to become considerably cheaper for motorists in Madrid while their more polluting counterparts are set to rise. Using smart parking meters, the city of Madrid will apply a surcharge on vehicles that pollute and a rebate for more efficient alternatives. The meters are powered by an integrated solar panel and connected via GPRS to the internet. Drivers simply enter their vehicles registration mark and select the duration on their stay and the meter calculates the appropriate tariff. From 1st July, the price a motorist pays to park in the city streets will be based on a table governed by the engine and the year of the car.
