How to reach 2020 global warming goal Reducing emissions by 2020 to a level that could keep temperature rise below two degrees Celsius is feasible – at least according to a new study by the UN Environment Programme (UNEP ). In its Bridging the Emissions Gap report, it suggests the accelerated uptake of renewable energy, combined with fuel switching and energy efficiency improvements can deliver a large part of the necessary cuts – with other measures including penetration of public transport; and the use of more fuel efficient vehicles in areas such as agriculture and waste management. The report also highlights aviation and shipping emissions as special cases – together they account for around five per cent of CO2 emissions.
