Why do we moan about motoring but refuse to get on our bikes? The Green Piece

Tuesday 27 August, 2013. The Green Piece Column. One of life’s ironies is that British motorists frequently moan about congestion and at the same time moan about the cost of running a car. Yet with the UK’s average journey just seven miles long, many of our journeys could easily be completed by bike or on foot, saving money and cutting congestion at the same time. So why aren’t more of our journeys undertaken this way? Why are we so stubbornly clinging to the car, even though it is so often an expensive way of going nowhere fast? Sure our weather sucks, but it is rarely truly challenging conditions that we must tolerate (searing heat, ice, snow, high winds, monsoon rains-they are all rare occurrences here in the UK). 5 miles or less?
