I wouldn't assume WAY lower. Other VW TDI owners routinely report numbers very close to EPA estimates. The Jetta Sportwagen TDI is rated at 30 city, 42 highway, and I regularly get 36-38mpg in combined driving (and I do NOT drive slowly or hypermile). I haven't gone on a long enough trip with mine to have an entire tankful of highway miles, so I can't really say what the mileage would be if I JUST was on the highway.
