A green city isn't a high-density megalopolis. It's one which has space for gardens and parks, especially if it's to be fair as well as sustainable. Tweet The future shape of cities seems to be emerging as a hot topic for debate again, for the first time for a decade or so. George Monbiot’s column in the Guardian this morning seems to bear this out. Unfortunately, he got it wrong. He is right, of course, that the sprawling mega-cities are a major environmental catastrophe waiting to happen. They are polluted, crime-ridden, poverty stricken and deeply unequal. But Monbiot’s solution that they need to be high density is going to make matters considerably worse - forcing the poor to swap their squatter camps and shanty huts for new bastilles which trap them in high rise tenements with no access to land or nature.
