Rain and snowfall during the winter helped to refill depleted lakes and reservoirs and restore favorable stream flows for large parts of New York State that were affected by drought during the fall of 2016. By the end of February, this recovery and a generally mild winter with almost no residual snowpack across the state suggested stable stream flows and excellent early season trout fishing conditions. March however, has proven to be a wild card bringing episodes of frigid weather and a snowstorm that dropped heavy snow across the state. Anglers seeking to tangle with wild spring-run rainbow trout could benefit if the cold snap prolongs spawning runs on some of the waters discussed below.
