Great Repeal Bill: Government vows to maintain environmental protection

The government today sought to reassure green businesses and environmentalists that regulatory stability will be maintained when the UK leaves the EU, publishing a white paper on its proposed Great Repeal Bill detailing how it intends to transfer EU law into UK legislation. An estimated 80 per cent of UK environmental legislation is thought to stem from the EU, covering a wide range of areas such as renewable energy, product standards, waste, recycling, biodiversity and habitats, air quality, and marine protection. Green groups and businesses have warned Brexit could result in many of these rules being watered down, scrapped, or left unenforced.
