As world warms, how do we decide when a plant is native?

A map of the United States' various temperature zones, created by the U.S. Department of Agriculture and used by farmers and gardeners to determine which plants can thrive where. From 1990 to 2006, several of the zones — based on average extreme minimum temperature, ranging from -30 degrees F (deep purple) to 40 degrees F (light pink) — shifted northward in response to climate change.
