50 Years After “Silent Spring,” What Would Rachel Say?

I would hazard a guess that many - not all - but many of the peoples of the world are at least somewhat aware of the dangers associated with the use of pesticides - even those considered “safe” for use on human food products. But lets face it - if it were not for all the chemicals used on our agricultural crops - we would probably not be able to support our present world population of some 7 billion people. An obvious solution would be to reduce world population to a number compatible with the naturally sustainable resources of the earth - but then we all know that is never going to happen - so just what is the answer??? Technology - of course. Now we don’t even have to use “dangerous” pesticides - we just alter the genetic make-up of plants to suit our needs. Who knows what new fixes are just around the corner. All one has to do is to look at the course of human history. ...
