Lib Dem debate welcome, now we need 20mph default Issed on: Monday 24 September, 2012 Responding to a motion passed at Liberal Democrat Party conference that supports the wider introduction of 20mph limits in built-up areas, Sustrans' Policy Advisor Joe Williams said: "Encouraging more 20mph limits is a positive move - slower speeds will save lives, improve neighbourhoods and boost walking and cycling across the country, helping us to live healthier lifestyles. "The next step on 20mph must be a change to the national default speed limit. A postcode lottery that sees children in one area of the country live safer lives than those elsewhere is completely unacceptable. "As well as saving lives, a quick shift to 20mph speed limits across the board would be more cost-effective for the taxpayer than bit-by-bit change."
