Few environmental legends rival Jacques Cousteau, who died in 1997, for his energy, charisma, popularity and skills as an educator. This week, two of his granddaughters stopped by The New York Times. Alexandra and Céline Cousteau, cousins, did not seem to know each other’s schedule but were on the same wavelength in some other respects. Both women are articulate on water and other environmental issues, of course, and both have leveraged the Cousteau name into corporate sponsorships and beauty brands. Céline Cousteau has given her name to ocean botanicals produced by the Swiss cosmetics maker La Prairie, for example. The two Cousteaus are also in the inspiration business, using their name, they say, to persuade others to take interest in a range of ecological concerns.
