Pregnant Women Given Drugs To Prevent Childhood Obesity: Alison Wetton, the CEO of a British weight loss corpora...

, where obese pregnant women at the Liverpool Women's Hospital will be given a drug to reduce the food supply to their unborn babies. It will not help the women themselves lose weight, but researchers hypothesize that the drug may prevent the birth of oversized babies, reducing, among other effects, the need for cesarean sections. Critics have said, however, that taking a pill will not address the real problem, which is the mothers' unhealthy lifestyles. The drug, Metformin, reduces blood sugar levels and is already used to treat diabetic pregnant women. 400 women will be involved in the trial, although half the patients will take Metformin, and the other half will be given a placebo. Doctors hope, also, to reduce the instance of pre-eclampsia, a potentially fatal condition that arises during pregnancy and is particularly prevalent among overweight mothers. Alison Wetton, ...
