Cambodia's wildlife pioneer: saving species and places in Southeast Asia's

In February 2011, the Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen approved a 20,400 hectare concession to United Khmer Group for this titanium mine. The approval came ahead of a meeting that had been scheduled on February 11, 2011, at the Council for the Development of Cambodia, that was meant to discuss the proposed mining project. In a press release at that time, Suwanna Gauntlett noted that, “Without scientific research to prove the economic viability of the proposed mine, bulldozing the rainforest is simply destructive and does not even make good business sense." In a dramatic turnaround two months later, the Cambodian government reversed its decision. Following a weekly cabinet meeting on April 8, 2011, Prime Minister Hun Sen announced that it would rescind the permit for the titanium mine due to concerns about its impact on the environment, biodiversity and local livelihoods.
