Some ask “Who is it that even wants ivory these day” and the answer unfortunately is “many”. Every Japanese businessman aspiring or otherwise demands a uniquely carved stamp called a “chop” to sign contracts and documents with. Because the majority of Chinese and Japanese believe (religion and superstition again) in “Sympathetic Magic” the chop is only auspicious if made from the tooth of the world’s largest and most powerful land animal, therefore, a huge percentage of poached ivory ends up in Japan. In China, Japan, Malaysia Brunei, Yemen, India, Kashmir, Thailand just for starters are 1000’s of carving shops and suppliers producing “lucky” (remember sympathetic magic) statues, boxes and jewellery for willing clients many living in Europe and the USA as well as the East.
