The world's ocean is overfished, overpolluted, and underprotected. From coral reefs to submarine canyons, in temperate and tropical waters, our ocean needs protection from the increasing impacts of human activities. In the US, more than ten percent of our land has been set aside as parks, wildlife refuges, and wilderness areas, yet less than one percent of the ocean has such protection. Just like Yellowstone and Yosemite on land, our planet's most spectacular and ecologically important underwater treasures deserve lasting protection. For more than two decades, Ocean Conservancy has been working to protect some of the ocean's most extraordinary places through the creation of marine protected areas (MPAs) — refuges where ocean life can recover and thrive.
