A Boon to Birds: Public Preserves By LESLIE KAUFMAN Department of Interior Publicly owned land, ocean and marshes provide habitats for at least half of the American populations of 300 bird species, the Department of Interior reports . It is the first time that the department has devoted its annual State of the Birds report to an assessment of avian life on such property. Surveying 850 million acres of public land and 3.5 million square miles of ocean, it said that national wildlife refuges, parks and forests offered significant opportunities to reverse the decline of 251 bird species that are categorized by the government as threatened to some degree. Researchers generated a distribution map, based partly on citizen-reported data, as a resource to help agencies figure out the best way to help birds in specific areas.
