World's Biggest Beef Company Agrees to Not Buy Deforestation Beef, Use Slave Labor Report after report has illustrated the direct connection between beef cattle ranching and deforestation in Brazil, and now there's some progress on reigning in the tree-felling. As Mongabay reports the world's largest beef company, JBS-Friboi , has agreed to stop buying beef from ranches that have been involved with illegal deforestation and using slave labor. From 2012, the company will only buy its meat from companies that hold the proper Brazilian environmental certifications. Had it not agreed to this action, it would have been liable for potential fines up to $1.3 billion under Brazilian law. View the entire comment thread.
