Germany Announces First Tender For Ground-Mounted PV (150 MW)

There are quite a few reasons why we should be less enthusiastic about the German policy change from FITs to auctions for “large” installations. 1, The cutoff is 500kw, a medium-sized commercial installation. IKEA car park setups are bigger. The paperwork costs of auctions – and the high risk of a bid’s not winning – are too high for any businesses other than professional solar developers. IIRC British FITs stop at 5 MW, a much more realistic cutoff point. 2. The German government created the cutoff in 2013, leading to an immediate halt in utility solar. It’s taken them two years to set up all the regulations and launch the first auction. Incompetence? That might explain it in Mexico, but for Germany we have to infer it was a deliberate stop. However, Gabriel can’t fly in the face of economic logic much longer. Brazil got 8.6c$/kwh for its very first national solar auction...
