Why Britain needs a sustainable food policy - fast. {By Tim Viita pf @WWF for the officials @DefraGovUK}

Food can very quickly turn political. The Arab Spring was sparked in a tinderbox of food shortages and soaring prices. As Bob Marley once sang, “A hungry man is an angry man.” Food and oil prices are still volatile - and so is food politics. The current buzzphrase ’food security‘ could become just that: a security issue, grain guarded with guns. Hunger isn’t the only issue. The way we produce our food also places a huge strain on our planet - using 70% of fresh water, causing about 30% of biodiversity loss and 30% of global greenhouse gas emissions. Emissions that drive climate change, which in turn will make it harder to produce food. Fixing our food system to feed the world sustainably is one of the greatest challenges of the 21st century.
