Is The NFL’s New Policy on Domestic Violence a Publicity Stunt?

After reading the entire statement by the NFL commissioner (and believe me, it was long), what was most disturbing to me was a presumably well-intentioned comment that actually revealed the larger societal issue of tone-deafness and denial about domestic violence. The commissioner stated his understanding that the NFL is held to "a higher standard," which makes me want to shout NO! there is only ONE standard and that is what is right and what is wrong NO MATTER WHO YOU ARE. That the NFL is more visible is true; that the money involved in sports and other high profile occupations creates skewed perceptions and outcomes is also true, but through our collective outcry we have made it clear that the ONLY acceptable standard is that abuse and violence is wrong, a crime, and should have a punishment in proportion to the severity of the crime.
