California's Military Bases Could Generate 30x More Electricity From Solar Power Than They Consume

US Army Environmental Command /CC BY 2.0 A new survey of the solar power potential of all the military bases in California , conducted by the Department of Defense, shows that even though just 4% of their available land is suitable for development, they could still install 7,000 MW of solar power. That's enough to generate thirty times more electricity than is currently consumed by all these bases. The solar installations would take up 25,000 acres of land deemed "suitable" in the study and a further 25,000 acres of land deemed "likely" or "questionably" suitable, out of a total of 100,000 acres of so classified land.
