IMF: Getting energy prices right will drive economic benefits: BusinessGreen

Shifting taxes onto fossil fuels and away from income or capital could provide huge benefits for countries while protecting the environment at the same time, according to a new study from the International Monetary Fund (IMF). The organisation warns that many countries rely too much on general income, payroll, and consumption taxes for their fiscal objectives, and too little on taxes on energy use. The report argues that even when energy taxes are in place in many countries they are "set at levels that do not reflect environmental damage, notably global warming, air pollution, and various side-effects of motor vehicle use".
