Ed Davey and @deccgovuk will be pushing for tougher EU emissions targets at the ministers meeting today

An increase in the EU's carbon reduction ambitions will be Ed Davey's main goal at today's Environment Council meeting of ministers in Brussels. The recently appointed Energy and Climate Change Secretary will back a push to strengthen the 2020 targeted cut in domestic emissions from 20 per cent to 25 per cent at his first meeting of EU ministers. A roadmap published by the Commission last year declared the current goal is not cost-effective in terms of meeting the overall 2050 target of reducing emissions 80 per cent on 1990 levels, arguing that it would make more sense to deliver deeper cuts sooner. Proponents also argue that without tougher targets the EU risks being locked in to carbon-intensive infrastructure that would make future attempts at emission reduction even more expensive.
