On Our Radar: Dredging the Savannah River: For a mix of economic and environmental reasons, opponents line up ag...

Environmentalists and South Carolina lawmakers oppose an effort to deepen the Savannah River so bigger container ships can stop in Georgia. Conservation groups ask the South Carolina Supreme Court to nullify actions by a state board approving the deepening of the Savannah River . The project pits environmentalists and the state assembly against Gov. Nikki Haley, who supports the project. Beyond environmental considerations, South Carolina lawmakers say the dredging effort would give Savannah a competitive advantage over Charleston by allowing larger container ships to reach the Georgia port.
