The Panda went to parliament this week to protect our frozen planet
We gave evidence to the Environmental Audit Committee on ‘Protecting the Arctic’ in parliament on 29 February. Our own polar specialist Rod Downie was on the panel, along with colleagues from Norway and Russia. We drew attention to the seemingly contradictory position of the UK government. On the one hand it’s working to mitigate the effects of climate change, while on the other hand it’s looking to the hydrocarbon reserves in the Arctic to address the UK’s energy security. We made it clear we couldn’t think of a less secure way of ensuring our energy security than Arctic oil and gas. Added to the lack of research on the region’s changing ecosystem, and lack of safety procedures in place, we highlighted the need for a precautionary approach in relation to oil and gas developments.
