Ocean acidifying faster than any time in 300 million years

02 Mar 2012: Ocean Acidifying Faster Than Any Time in 300 Million Years, Study Says The world’s oceans may be acidifying faster today than during any period over the last 300 million years , a phenomenon that could have dire consequences for many marine species and ecosystems, according to a new study. In a review of hundreds of paleoceanographic studies, a team of international scientists found An Ominous Warning on the Effects of Ocean Acidification A 2010 study found that the seas are acidifying ten times faster today than during the Paleocene-Exocene Thermal Maximum, when a mass extinction occurred. As Carl Zimmer reported, changes in ocean chemistry due to the burning of fossil fuels may portend a new wave of die-offs.
