More Views on Climate Risk and Arctic Methane

We have 800,000 years of methane records from the Antarctic EPICA Dome C ice core [link to relevant paper ]. The highest values are encountered during several past interglacial periods (stage 19, about 800,000 years ago; stage 9.3, about 300,000 years ago). The sharpest methane concentration increases occur during deglaciations, in phase with Greenland (NH) temperature and monsoon intensity increases. The sources of methane variations can be estimated using the interpolar gradient (for the last climatic cycle, using Greenland-Antarctic ice core differences after age scale synchronization) and also using stable isotopes of carbon and hydrogen of methane. The data rule out methane hydrates as a major contributor to (i) glacial-interglacial variations during the last deglaciation, and (ii) millennial methane increases that occur in phase with Greenland temperature abrupt even...
