On Our Radar: Reports of Power Plant Protest in China

Residents of Haimen, in Guangdong Province in China, report clashes with the police in an environmental protest against the expansion of a power plant. [Agence France-Presse] Texas forestry officials estimate that 100 million to 500 million trees have died in this year’s drought. [Texas Forest Service] The National Academies warn the Virginia legislature that lifting its moratorium on uranium mining could pose big safety and environmental risks. [The Washington Post] A scientist explains how bioluminescence — the way that animals make light to protect themselves or for other purposes — is shared by as many as 90 percent of the creatures in the open ocean. She is using it to fight pollution in a lagoon that researchers say is one of Florida’s most threatened ecosystems. [The New York Times]
