Malaysia Emerging as Transit Point for Ivory Smuggling: Fifteen tons of elephant tusks and other ivory products

Associated Press Malaysian custom officials inspecting elephant tusks that were shipped from Mombasa, Kenya. A wildlife protection group reports that Malaysia, where hundreds of African elephant tusks were seized this week, is becoming a transit point for illegal ivory that is being sold in markets around Asia. In the fourth case of its kind this year, Malaysian customs officials seized 15 tons of tusks and other ivory products on Monday worth an estimated $1.3 million, said Azis Yacub, the director of the customs department in the central state of Selangor. The shipment, which also contained handicrafts, originated in Mombasa, Kenya, and had been destined for Cambodia. Mr. Azis said that customs officials uncovered the ivory in a shipping container in Port Klang, Malaysia, after receiving a tip.
