100 Beluga Whales At Risk After Becoming Trapped In Ice in Russia.

Mark Simmonds, WDCS international director of science said: “There is grave concern and gathering evidence that these lethal and very sad events are increasing as climate change makes the development of sea ice increasingly irregular and the whales are caught out by sudden fast icing- up of channels and breathing holes in the ice. Many such lethal events probably happen unnoticed and in the Russian Arctic where we know little about the beluga populations could be a major conservation threat. We have to hope that a vessel with ice-breaking capacity is close enough to free this large group.”
