Barcelona Soccer Star Carlos Puyol Steps Up to Save Orangutans

United Nations Great Apes Survival Partnership /via The Indonesian rainforest is home to 90% of the world's orangutans. Unfortunately for the animals, it's also a center of the palm oil industry that is now one of the three main drivers of deforestation , globally. The loss of habitat is leading to more conflicts with humans. Half of the 7,000 Indonesians surveyed in 2009 reported having killed and eaten at least one orangutan . Now Spanish soccer star and captain of FC Barcelona Carlos Puyol is the face of "Act Now for Orangutans ," a campaign sponsored by the United Nations Great Apes Survival Partnership (GRASP) and International Animal Rescue (IAR). The goal of the campaign is to raise awareness of the deforestation caused by the palm oil industry and to generate donations for IAR, which is currently caring for more than 40 orphaned orangutans.
