Algeria Becomes Third Nation To Sign Desertec Deal

Tapping into the vast solar power potential of the Sahara desert is coming closer to reality. As Green Prophet reports, Algeria's state-owned Sonelgaz has just signed a cooperation agreement with the Desertec Industrial Initiative (formerly just Desertec) to export electricity. Platts quotes Sonelgaz's chief executive, saying that Algeria expects to be able to export the electricity from 10 GW of solar power plants. The MoU between Sonelgaz and Desertec marks the third major step in bringing into reality Desertec's grand vision of a network of renewable energy plants across North Africa, both solar and wind power, exporting electricity to Europe. In the past two months, Morocco announced the first 500 MW solar power plant would begin construction in 2012, and MedGrid announced that it is participating as well. Considering how much electricity it will be exporting, I wonder...
