A Reality Check on Ambitious Climate Targets

For the most part the political processes that are governing choices in this realm don’t work this way. They don’t generate ambitious systems thinking and radical changes. They are fragmented and based on lots of special deals that usually reflect lots of other factors at work (alongside concerns about climate change and other energy worries). For example, in California the politics for new nuclear plants are toxic and imported new nuclear via wire from some other place in the country is probably just about as toxic, not to mention the huge financing challenge for anyone thinking about new nuclear (witness the fits and starts at Southern or Duke where you have utilities and local officials who actually want new nuclear and yet still have a hard time getting the investment done).
