Green Blog: Arctic Predators, Caught in the Act

Arctic Alaska is often described as our county’s last great frontier, with its bitterly cold winters, Inupiat Eskimos on the hunt and caribou roaming the open tundra. At the same time, there is the reality of change, with oil drilling advancing, polar bears imperiled and the region’s snow pack threatened by global warming. Arctic Alaska also contains vast productive wetlands on its coastal plain that draw tens of thousands of breeding birds, mostly shorebirds and waterfowl, from across the globe to nest and rear young during the brief summer season. The buff-breasted sandpiper comes from the pampas of Argentina, the bar-tailed godwit from New Zealand and the Arctic tern from Antarctica, among other species.
