Best Practices for Smart Grid Consumer Engagement

This qualitative study examines customer engagement strategies and tactics used to engage with their customers from a range of smart grid programs across the United States. By learning from the successes of these emerging programs, Smart Grid stakeholders can better position themselves to meet consumer needs and preferences as they move forward with their Smart Grid efforts. This study examines the latest generation of AMI (advanced metering infrastructure) deployments, pricing programs, and active energy efficiency programs (i.e., those centering around behavior change). It draws from public research resources and interviews with over 40 key personnel at these programs responsible in some capacity for customer engagement efforts during Smart Grid planning, implementation and operations.
