Will 33% Renewables Pose a Huge Risk to California’s Grid?: When California deregulated its electricity sys...

When California deregulated its electricity system in the late 1990s, Jim Detmers helped develop and operate the state’s Independent System Operator (ISO) for the deregulated markets. “When we started the ISO, and I was raising red flags,” said Detmers, “everyone was saying, ‘There’s no problem; this is what we set up.’ I was saying, ‘No, we have a serious problem here.’” Power shortages, skyrocketing rates, and “a financial calamity” proved Detmers right. “I don’t want to see that again.” Bringing 33 percent renewable energy onto the state’s grid by 2020 is another “major transformation,” Detmers said with the seriousness of someone who has seen the system fail. He founded his Power System Resources consultancy because “we have to take on the responsibility of analyzing this and really understanding,” Detmers said. “Are we putting a burden on the system that is just going...
