San Francisco Seeks Bird-Safe Buildings

Like anyone who feels more at home outside than in, I’ve spent a considerable portion of my life gazing out windows. (Considerable, I said, not productive). Yet while windows help me feel connected with the great outdoors or at least let me catch a glimpse of something green now and then, they are not as “green” as the landscape that they frame. In fact, collisions with windows and reflective glass are estimated to kill as many as one billion birds in North America each year, or roughly 5 percent of the wild population.
