Turning the corporation upside down and inside out – looking at it a different way – is going to be critical going forward. True, unemployment is high and people are happy to have a job, any job. But recent surveys indicate that about a third of currently employed people are at least tentatively thinking about their options once the picture gets better. In the old model, managers might consider ‘their’ employees to be ingrates. In this new paradigm, they would do well to realize that about half of what makes the company what it is, and not just a knowledge, experience and institutional memory, is in danger of walking out the door. And while companies have had to cut back and ask employees to do more work during the economic downturn, they can find other ways, other than monetary, to make them the heart of the company.
