8 Spelling Mistakes Even Smart People Make | Care2 Healthy Living

English is indeed a "bastard" language, and difficult to grasp given all the exceptions. However, it is a testament to America's lowered education standards that most people are making even the simplest mistakes in writing and speaking. Even in allowing for differences due to dialects, we should expect our educational system to teach the basics properly. Things like "except" and "accept" are antonyms, yet they quite often are used interchangeably. Oftentimes, people will say, "Well, what is the difference, since English is evolving anyway?" There are basic conventions in grammar and spelling specifically because words are a difficult communication mode as it is. Which one of us would not want to be understood clearly?
