In a June 22 interview at the Nextwork Technology Conference, internet pioneer Vint Cerf said that if he had it to do all over again, he would have built more security into the system from the beginning. Indeed. During a smart grid panel discussion at ABB’s Western Utility Executive Conference held last week, NEMA Industry Director for Smart Grid Paul Molitor made a related observation when he compared cybersecurity in financial services with cybersecurity in the power industry. “Credit card swipe machines have the ability to encrypt data, whereas many of the devices on the grid do not,” said Molitor. A lack of encryption capability is not the only challenge facing utilities and system vendors in terms of securing the grid, but it illustrates where we’re starting from.
