Environmental groups sue the State Department and the Department of Interior in federal court in Nebraska to block the construction of the controversial Keystone XL pipeline. They say that TransCanada has already started to prepare the route for the 1,700-mile pipeline, even through federal environmental reviews are not complete. [Bloomberg News] Interior Secretary Ken Salazar says his department could be ready to issue new federal rules governing the gas drilling method known as hydraulic fracturing in about a month. He says he favors disclosure of the chemicals that companies use in drilling on public lands, but argues that there is no need to choose between drilling and protecting the environment.
