Gunman massacred six peasant neighbors of the Shipibo community Santa Clara de Uchunya in the Peruvian Amazon on Friday, September 1st. The presumed killers are "land traffickers" who are attempting to take over the territory by threats and intimidation. Now is the time for all allies of indigenous rights to take action and demand that the Peruvian government guarantee the safety of the community and indigenous leaders and address the underlying conflicts that led to this crisis. In June we issued an urgent action calling on Peruvian authorities to take preventative measures against death threats, to investigate illegal deforestation in the region, and to bring legal action against the oil palm company OchoSur. The government is stalling, and now we must step up the pressure.
