Why does the UK get a safer mac-n-cheese than the US?

I grew up in Europe as a child, moved to the US as an adult. The UK was beginning to develop a taste for US junk food as I was leaving. It is a different world and it should sadden us. Where I grew up, there were fresh meats from the butcher, fresh milk from the local dairy, and fresh fruit and veg from local markets. There was no need for prepackaged junk foods. In fact, our local grocery store, where we purchased cereal, flour, crisps, etc, was smaller than the 7-11 that is down the street from me. I dream of the US becoming a culture of fresh foods again. The over processed, salty, preservative foods we eat here are terrible for our health. Children are developing the bodies they will use their entire live and they are building that body on food dyes, additives, sugar and salt. :( Sad
