Modular, prefab HELIX furniture transforms rooms like architectural ivy
furniture system that generates a continuous interior space across vertical and horizontal surfaces. The Open Source Workshop design is unique in that it also acts as architecture by defining the spatial atmosphere and connecting rooms within a structure with one another or the outside. HELIX is manufactured through an iterative procedure guided by a 5-Axis CNC wire, which cuts the modules from a solid mass of expanded polystyrene sourced from corn. This completely recyclable material and low CO2 manufacturing process support the sustainable mission of the project. The lightweight prefabricated modules are available in a variety of sizes, colors, and orientations and can easily be assembled on site into a variety of arrangements. HELIX investigates the notion of space-atmosphere, adaptability, reuse, and sustainable manufacturing processes.
