Program helps train hard-to-adopt #dogs as detection dogs

“Detection dogs are intense dogs who are obsessive over a reward (usually a toy). This obsession can be used to train dogs to find something by scent in order to receive that valued reward,” explains the website which has a standard evaluation animal shelters or rescue groups can perform with dogs they think might be good candidates for the job. “To make a rewarding career of it, they must not only love their toy, but also love to search, be a balance of independent and compliant, and have a strong work ethic. Toy obsession is the easiest aspect to evaluate and other qualities are demonstrated later during training. The R2R Evaluation was designed to take a snapshot of many of these qualities and to evaluate the degree of toy obsession.”
