One of Russia's largest projects due online by year-end

Troubled turbine manufacturer FWT was contracted to supply the Kalmykia project The Priyutnenskaya project, sited in the Kalmykia Republic, southwest Russia, is being developed by Czech firm Falkon Capital. It has the potential to be expanded to 150MW, but the first phase will will be powered by 20 FWT 2.5MW turbines. According to Alexey Orlov, head of Kalmykia Republic, the climatic conditions of the region and its geographical location and terrain are perfectly suitable for the development of wind energy. Annual mean wind speeds at 66 meters are estimated at 8.1m/s, which is one of the highest figures in Russia. Falkon Capital first proposed the project in the early 2000s, but it was suspended due to the global recession in 2008.
