IFC explores 100MW of PV in Zambia

The World Bank’s International Finance Corporation (IFC) is exploring the development of 100MW of solar in Zambia. The two 50MW projects could be developed under the IFC’s Scaling Solar programme. They would be the first utility-scale PV projects in the country. Low rainfall has left hydropower reservoirs in the country low creating a power deficit of 560MW. Zambian President Edgar Chagwa Lungu has ordered the country's Industrial Development Corporation (IDC) to develop 600MW of solar power. “The Zambian government is resolved to address the current hydro power shortages caused by low rainfall through active promotion and increased use of renewable energy technologies,” said President Lungu, who is also chair of IDC Zambia.
